Periodontal Disease

At its core, gum disease is a condition that attacks the tissues of our teeth and gums. The building block for plaque are bacteria along with food debris--when this buildup isn't removed by brushing regularly it turns into calculus (tartar) which can cause serious damage if left untreated before doing any harm!

Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don't know it! Most people are not aware of this because the symptoms tend to be mild in early stages. Not only does research suggest that there may be a link between tooth loss caused by gum inflammation and other diseases such as stroke, researchers also believe they're determining if systemic conditions can be affected through bacteria-influenced oral health problems including type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular issues with smoking increasing risk for these complications among both you as well those around them.

Good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and plenty of dental visits are all you need to keep your teeth in good shape.

Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease:

  • Bleeding gums – Gums should never bleed, even when you brush vigorously or use dental floss.
  • Loose teeth – Also caused by bone loss or weakened periodontal fibers (fibers that support the tooth to the bone).
  • New spacing between teeth – Caused by bone loss.
  • Persistent bad breath – Caused by bacteria in the mouth.
  • Pus around the teeth and gums – Sign that there is an infection present.
  • Receding gums – Loss of gum around a tooth.
  • Red and puffy gums – Gums should never be red or swollen.
  • Tenderness or Discomfort – Plaque, calculus, and bacteria irritate the gums and teeth.
